Quick Answer

Shopify stores need DMARC because most customer-facing email (order confirmations, shipping updates, marketing) is sent through Shopify's infrastructure, and Google and Yahoo now require DMARC for any sender pushing more than 5,000 messages per day. Setup runs through Shopify and your DNS provider. In Shopify, go to Settings > Notifications > Sender Email and click Authenticate Your Domain to get the CNAME records to add to DNS. Once Shopify shows the domain as Authenticated (up to 24 hours for propagation), publish a DMARC record for the domain alongside existing SPF and DKIM. Start at p=none, read the aggregate reports, then move to p=quarantine and eventually p=reject once all legitimate sources are passing alignment.

DMARC isn’t a new regime; however, regulations and [email service providers](/email-services/google-yahoo-mandatory-to-deploy-dmarc-for-more-than-5000-daily-emails/) have now **made it mandatory**. This exercise is meant to reduce phishing and spoofing by filtering genuine and [fraudulent emails](https://www.cleveland.com/news/2024/01/us-postal-service-warns-of-latest-phishing-emails-scam.html). DMARC works in accordance with [SPF](/content/spf-record-check) and [DKIM](/resources/what-is-dkim) to instruct recipients’ servers to either reject or mark illegitimate emails as spam, reducing the likelihood of victims engaging with such emails and getting manipulated. 

By publishing a well-updated [DMARC record](/resources/create-dmarc-records) in your domain’s DNS, you [combat business email compromises](/email-security/top-strategies-to-avoid-business-email-compromise-and-upgrade-email-security/), ransomware, spamming, etc., attempted in your name. - Once everything is set, you will see an “**Authenticated**” notification on your Shopify portal. This process can take up to 24 hours.
