A cyberattack forced Houston County School District in Alabama to delay opening day for the second time, extending summer vacation by two weeks. All 4,000 district computers had to be reconfigured, a three-week process. Louisiana saw a similar incident the previous month: the governor declared a state of emergency after Sabine, Morehouse, and Ouachita parishes were hit simultaneously. School districts and municipalities are increasingly targeted, and in most cases someone clicked a link they should not have. Phishing attacks can [cause a lot of damage](https://www.csoonline.com/article/2975807/phishing-is-a-37-million-annual-cost-for-average-large-company.html), so we try to not make light of them. But every now and then you have to look on the bright side.

There was [news](https://www.scmagazine.com/home/security-news/malware/cyberattack-forces-houston-county-schools-to-postpone-opening-day/?utm%5Fsource=newsletter&utm%5Fmedium=email&utm%5Fcampaign=SCUS%5FNewswire%5F20190805&hmSubId=01xQvtS0ero1&email%5Fhash=0da939dab246e8101d6090def505f6f5&mpweb=1325-9501-1896988) last week that “Several thousand school children in Alabama had their summer vacation extended by two weeks as the _Houston County School District was forced for the second time to delay opening day due to a cyberattack_.”

Finally, a **phishing attack** that makes somebody happy. The children probably don’t even know what a phishing attack is, but I’m certain they like it.

“The district has not said exactly what type of malware is involved, other than to note that no ransom has been paid and that all the district’s 4,000 computers need to be reconfigured, a process expected to take three more weeks.” _Somewhere, somebody clicked on a link they shouldn’t have_.

Of course, this isn’t the first time something like this has happened. [Just last month](https://www.scmagazine.com/home/security-news/government-and-defense/louisiana-declares-state-of-emergency-after-cyberattacks-hit-three-school-districts/?utm%5Fsource=newsletter&utm%5Fmedium=email&utm%5Fcampaign=SCUS%5FNewswire%5F20190729&hmSubId=01xQvtS0ero1&email%5Fhash=0da939dab246e8101d6090def505f6f5&mpweb=1325-9434-1896988), in Louisiana, the governor declared a state of emergency when three school districts were hit with a cyberattack simultaneously.

“Gov. John Bel Edwards issued the declaration in response to cyber incidents that took place over the last few weeks at Sabine, Morehouse, and Ouachita parishes in North Louisiana. None of the three districts named had posted any information regarding cyberattacks.” Somewhere, somebody clicked on a link they shouldn’t have.

First it was [municipalities](/phishing-protection/phishing-prevention-technology-why-arent-municipalities-onboard/), now it’s school districts.
