Email authentication has emerged as an essential part of Gmail [cybersecurity](https://www.duocircle.com/). Tools such as SPF, DKIM, and DMARC help to validate if an **email indeed belongs** to the specific domain. However, these tools have been helpful in protecting against various spoofing techniques, but not all issues with emails.

That is because verification does not care about the **source of the email** but its legitimacy. When [attackers gain access to email accounts](https://www.securityweek.com/chick-fil-a-accounts-get-fried-in-credential-stuffing-attack/), they send emails from the authorized email inbox, which makes their emails look legitimate, thereby overcoming most defenses. _That is why the Gmail security system needs more than just authentication_.

## What Email Authentication Can and Cannot Do

The reason why [email authentication](https://www.duocircle.com/resources/email-authentication/) was developed is to make sure that attackers will not be able to **pretend to send emails** from a domain that does not belong to them.

SPF enables the **owner of the domain** to define which server can send emails from this particular domain. DKIM provides a way to sign email messages so that the recipients can identify whether the email message has been modified.

These measures work for some types of attacks, especially domain [spoofing attacks](https://www.infosecurity-magazine.com/news/infosec2025-email-domains-spoofing/), since they help make it difficult for the criminals to send spam messages pretending to be from **legitimate brands**.

On the other hand, authentication will not verify whether the sender of an email is the owner of the account used to send the message. If someone sends an email from a hacked Gmail account, it will still pass the **authentication process**.

## Stolen Accounts Create a Bigger Challenge

The main issue with **Gmail cybersecurity** is that there is no need for attackers to impersonate an email address because they target the real account holders.

The account credentials could be **obtained through phishing**, password reuse, malware attacks, and other methods. _Once the attacker manages to get into the account, they will have access to emails, reply, and send their own legitimate messages_.

The invoice is sent to the financial department via an email originating from a legitimate **business email address**, thereby raising no red flags for the recipient.

[Phishing emails](https://www.duocircle.com/content/email-phishing-prevention/how-to-investigate-phishing-emails/) were thought to be very easy to spot based on **their suspicious origin** and mistakes. But phishing scams nowadays can be quite sneaky.

The scammer employs familiar names, **believable dialogues**, and [intimidation tactics](https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-supreme-court-intimidation) to push the victim into doing something. It might include looking at some documents, changing passwords, or even paying money.

Authentication can be used to verify the actual identity of the sender, but it does not reveal anything about **manipulation attempts**.

## Attackers Use Trusted Services

The techniques employed by [cybercriminals](https://www.livemint.com/news/us-news/us-unveils-global-visa-policy-targeting-cybercriminals-and-online-scammers-what-to-know-11784818704177.html) have changed as a response to the better protection that is now provided against email attacks. In addition to using **fake domain names**, cybercriminals also use actual services and legitimate accounts.

Some examples are:

- Sending emails through Gmail accounts that have been hacked
- Utilizing cloud storage links that are legitimate
- Concealing malicious files in actual documents
- Hijacking ongoing email exchanges
- Using the **writing style of known contacts**

_These techniques are more difficult to detect because they involve legitimate services and accounts_.

## Why Gmail Security Needs More Than Authentication

A strong Gmail cybersecurity strategy looks at more than [email headers](https://proton.me/blog/what-are-email-headers). Security systems also need to **monitor unusual activity**, such as:

- Logins from unexpected locations
- Sudden changes in email activity
- New forwarding rules **added to accounts**
- Large numbers of messages sent in a short time
- Unusual requests from familiar contacts

Such signs can be used to determine whether there are any **compromised accounts** before they do any significant harm.

As stolen accounts are one of the biggest sources of **potential email dangers**, the security of an account’s access is no less significant than the authentication of the received emails.

[Multi-factor authentication (MFA)](https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/multi-factor-authentication) is an **additional security measure** that does not include passwords. If an intruder obtains the password, it won’t help him/her access the account because of the secondary level of verification.

Organizations can also reduce risk by encouraging users to use strong, unique passwords, avoid [sharing credentials](https://cybernews.com/security/24-billion-credentials-data-leak/), and regularly **review account settings**.

## People Are Still Part of Email Security

Although technology helps prevent a **variety of threats**, the human factor cannot be underestimated.

Employees need to be able to detect suspicious activity, particularly any attempts at transferring money or revealing passwords and other [confidential data](https://www.it.tum.de/en/it/it-security/for-employees/confidential-data/definition-confidential-data/). It is also recommended that any unusual requests be verified via another **medium of communication** rather than just via e-mail.

Training programs can teach people that sometimes a message from a known address may pose a danger if the account was hacked.

## A Layered Approach Provides Better Protection

_Email authentication helps secure your Gmail account to some extent, but there are other means to secure Gmail accounts than just email authentication_. This helps **prevent impersonation**, but does not protect from threats coming from legitimate accounts.

This more effective strategy involves the use of MFA, account monitoring, employee education, [endpoint protection](https://www.checkpoint.com/cyber-hub/threat-prevention/what-is-endpoint-security/), and [security audits](https://www.fortinet.com/resources/cyberglossary/security-audit). Such measures will help organizations recognize any unusual activities and counteract them before the **attacker inflicts damage**.

As the nature of email-based attacks evolves, there is no place for a single solution. Gmail security will be most effective when authentication is accompanied by additional measures that cover all aspects: **technical and human**.
