The Process
When Harry composes an email and hits the send button, his UA communicates with MS, after which it pushes the email to MS that stores the email for transmitting it. The outbound SMTP fetch the email from Harry’s MS destined for Jack.
Harry’s MS tries to initiate communication with Jack’s MS. This communication between two mail servers is guided by SMTP. Harry’s MS alias SMTP Client initiates communication by sending commands, whereas Jack’s MS alias SMTP Server responds to the command with all the numeric codes.
The SMTP client and server make use of the handshaking process for determining themselves as well as the sender’s and receiver’s identity and the services offered by them. On successful completion of this process, the SMTP client sends the email further.
Inbound SMTP relays the received email to Jack’s MS post-filtering, which on receiving it stores it in his mailbox.
