Are there suspicious links?

If you read blogs a lot, you’ll know that many writers have affiliate links to earn a little money with each post. Because blog posts are dotted with these links, readers become complacent in expecting that these are safe to click on.

In general, they are. But still, it doesn’t hurt to double check. If an affiliate link piques your interest, first hover your cursor over it to make the destination URL appear on the bottom of your screen. If the URL looks strange, don’t click on it. Instead, take note of what the blogger shared and Google it yourself to find out more details.

Does it ask you to log in with your account?

This question can go for either visiting a blog or creating one. Cybercriminals send out spoofed emails from sites such as WordPress, requiring you to log into your account to update it.

If you receive an email like this, don’t use the links provided in it, even if you feel like it’s a legitimate email. Instead, type the domain name into your browser so you’re 100% sure you’re on the correct site. By following spear phishing best practices, you’ll have no risk of your credentials being stolen.
